Sheer Draperies

Extra-wide sheer fabrics are those which exceed 54″, and are intended to be used railroaded, in order to produce full-length seamless draperies on wide windows. Do-it-yourself decorators are often confused about the concept of railroaded fabric. Typically, home decorating fabric is woven and printed so that the cut edges become the top and bottom of the finished product, and the selvedges become the side seams. Railroaded fabrics are woven and printed so that the cut edges become the side seams and the selvedges become the hem and heading of the drapery. Some of these fabrics will include a decorative border or a beaded weight or “Euro-hem” finish along the hemline. Determine the style of drapery and the type of curtain rod you will be using prior to purchasing your
fabric.

Fabrics for Window Treatments

Window treatments can be one of the most significant design elements in a room making the design process a bit overwhelming. Window treatments can become the focal point of the room if you choose color, contrast, large fabric patterns, layers of fabric, or large-scale fabric treatments. So the choice of a fabric pattern can impact the final outcome of the room. As a comparison, drapery panels that have little pattern and match the wall color will fade into the background. These draperies will appear muted and not provide much contrast. This effect is desired if you already have strong design elements in the room or desire a “calm” effect.

window treatments

Wanting to freshen up a room…or maybe redecorating…here’s an easy way to use the panels you’ve got but make them look new. Choose velvet ribbon in any colors that work with your decor and turn plain tab-top curtains into an elegant treatment. To achieve this look, lay out the panels and attach horizontal bands of ribbon with fabric glue. To make the ties at the top, cut the tabs off, then cut six evenly placed, 1-inch horizontal slits across each panel. Finish by cutting V shapes out of the ends of each tie. Now you’ve got a pretty new window treatment…pat yourself on the back!!

Home Building and Curtain Rods

Curtains rods are a very important facet of your windows in home building and remodeling. They can either enhance or detract from the look of your windows very easily, so you want to be sure that you choose the right curtain rod and install it correctly.
Curtain Rods Explained
A curtain rod actually consists of three different parts. The first part is the pole that the window coverings goes on. This pole is capped off with finials that go on each end of the pole and all of this is held by brackets that hold the rod to the wall. These parts can be simply functional or they can be detailed to help add a decorative element to your window.

A couple of other curtain ideas include:
1. Instead of throwing away old draperies, try making placemats out of them - make some matching coasters as well.
2. Old draperies could be transformed into little doll blankets for the children. See the little eyes light up because you’ve made something special for their “baby”.
3. Twin flat sheets make great curtains for a child’s room. You can use the design of your choice, and they’re already hemmed!
4. Bath towels make excellent bathroom curtains. Either hang them with the clip rings, or turn down one end for a casing. Use ribbon, or some other trim for the tie backs, or just let them hang.

This Idea Alone Was Worth The Trip To Phoenix

We were in a little antique mall in the Phoenix area last September and I saw these wonderful little O rings with clips attached…they were hanging from a wire that was attached beneath a little shelf in someone’s booth. Hanging from the clips were old photos/instant ancestors.
