Window curtains are an important feature in your house as they protect the insides of your home. They give you your privacy and also block the harsh rays of the sun. They help control the temperature inside the room. They block draughts of air from blowing in. They also protect your furniture from UV light. Windows can add to the aesthetic value of your room. In fact you can completely spoil the tasteful decoration of your room by choosing the wrong curtains.

We do run ceiling fans in both bedrooms and keep all the interior doors open as much as possible to encourage good air flow. And with the daughter away for much of the summer, I’ve closed the curtains in her bedroom to limit the sunshine that goes into there. (If we close the drapes in the living / dining part of the house, it gets quite dark and we feel a bit claustrophobic.) But here’s something else I did two summers ago, and this morning put up again: dark paper window “shades” in the master bedroom. Our bedroom has hand-me-down white lacy curtains. They’re pretty against the dark red walls. We plan to get wooden shutters to go under the curtains, but that’s not in the budget right now. We have white paper temporary shades on the bottom half of the windows for privacy.

Before entering this industry, I was completely unaware of the vast number of options available to consumers when it comes to window treatments. When it comes to window treatments, I like to keep the designs simple and elegant. I mostly use side panels which add just enough texture and fabric to soften a window. I also like roman shades. I’m not a fan of swags or valances or anything that obstructs the view beyond the window. Window treatments should enhance a window, not overpower or hide it.
