For small windows, mini blinds could be your best window treatment alternative. They come in a wide variety of materials like vinyl, aluminum, wood and PVC plastic. Mini blinds can be a great way to decorate a small area due to them being a very inexpensive window treatment, their ease to use, and that they work well in combination with other window covering and blind treatments. They come in a vast combination of colors which makes them easy to blend or highlight an area. Installation is a key factor with mini blinds. Take for instance aluminum mini blinds, when installed properly they are extremely energy efficient, will protect furniture and flooring from those harmful UV rays, and can give great sound absorption. When deciding on your mini blinds a couple of things that you should take into consideration is how will the window blind fit into your room’s decor or what level of privacy you desire.
For instance you may want no light appearing when the blinds are closed and lots of privacy, you will want to choose a mini blind that is not transparent in material choice and closes very flat. But if privacy during the evening hours is not an issue and you want maximum daylight during the day, choosing a sheer mini blind is a beautiful answer to your needs. Overall, mini blinds can be the most cost effective start to your window treatment design and with their combination with other window treatments like curtains, cornices, swags, valances – you will achieve a very professional finish to your window decor that will enhance any rooms appeal.

We do run ceiling fans in both bedrooms and keep all the interior doors open as much as possible to encourage good air flow. And with the daughter away for much of the summer, I’ve closed the curtains in her bedroom to limit the sunshine that goes into there. (If we close the drapes in the living / dining part of the house, it gets quite dark and we feel a bit claustrophobic.) But here’s something else I did two summers ago, and this morning put up again: dark paper window “shades” in the master bedroom. Our bedroom has hand-me-down white lacy curtains. They’re pretty against the dark red walls. We plan to get wooden shutters to go under the curtains, but that’s not in the budget right now. We have white paper temporary shades on the bottom half of the windows for privacy.

I thought I’d take a close look at these insulating window shades today that Zero Energy Design is referencing in their energy model. There are a lot of cellular shades that are made up of one, two or three layers of honeycomb fabric with air in between the cells that makes the shade act as an insulator. From what I found, most shades can increase the R-value of a window by anywhere from 2.0 to 4.8 depending on the number and size of the cells and the material used. This is pretty significant since most energy star, double pane, low-e windows still have an R value of around 3.0 or less.

We have always known bamboo to be one of today’s most popular materials used in bamboo window shades. This is because people found out the bamboo is eco-friendly, practical, durable and most of all, bamboo has been proven to be one of the most versatile wood material that can be used without having to worry about the strength and durability with economy combined. Bamboo window shades which is the made product can be a very interesting modification in the early days but today, that set up has changed. Bamboo has been the most sold and most sought after finished products of any window shades that you can find in the online market as well as in the local stores near you. Although bamboo has proven to be this good to be used as a major material for making window shades, there are other most popular uses of bamboo jutes and wood.

The shutters that a person buys for their home can vary depending on what type they get. Shutters are a great way to add to a homes beauty, but shades can also be nice, and it is hard to decide which is best when you have the money to spend on any type. I am sure this video might make it even harder whether to choose shades or shutters, but it will give you an appreciation for the underestimated window shades.

Window coverings serve an important role in your home, giving you privacy and also protecting your furniture and décor from the harshness of prolonged, direct sunlight. But the range of choices is so wide, including blinds, shades, shutters and curtains, that some homeowners have a hard time deciding which they prefer, or whether they can mix their window coverings according to the room where they are installed. There are no hard and fast rules about what you should use, versus what you could use. The decision is up to your tastes, preferences, and what works with your decorating scheme. What you decide is great for one room, may not fit in another, so you switch from blinds in the bathroom to window shades in the bedroom, and that is just fine, as long as you are happy with the way the décor looks when you’re done.
