Uses Of Drapery Fabric

Using discount drapery fabric as part of your decorating scheme is a simple and inexpensive way to update your home design. Don’t be tempted to limit yourself to curtains when considering this style of material, drapery fabric can be used to fashion table covers, seat cushions, pillow cases and even duvet covers.

The traditional art of sewing seems to be every decorator’s worst nightmare and they have come up with numerous ingenious way to use drapery fabric in the home without having to sew a stitch.

The first way is simply to fold fabric before you hang it. Careful accordion folds will hang well and will maintain their shape if good quality heavy fabric is used. You can thread the folded material through rings fitted to the walls to create a classic valance, with tails that cascade down on either side.

Another way to avoid the sewing machine is to use a heat activated adhesive, specifically designed for fabric. This has the appearance of a thin sheet of web-like white material and you place it between two pieces of material to fasten them together. When you run a hot iron over the material the glue is activated and secures the material. Always make sure the adhesive is washable if necessary, as many are not.

Cellular Shades

Cellular Shades (also known as Honeycomb Shades or Cell Shades) are great for light and temperature control as well as Privacy and sound absorption. Light Filtering Cellular Shades provide a warm glow and let light filter through while blocking direct sunlight and heat. Choose a blackout Cellular Shade if you need total darkness in areas such as bedrooms.  Unlike Pleated Shades that have visible strings, Cellular shades do not have holes that can let light enter the room. The lift cords are hidden between the cellular fabric of the Cellular material so there are no visible string holes or strings to let light in and take away from the beauty of the fabric. Cellular Shades are extremely energy efficient and have a very high insulation R-value.

Decorative Iron Shutters

A window shutter is a solid and stable window covering usually consisting of a frame of vertical stiles and horizontal rails (top, center and bottom). Within this frame can be set louvers (both operable or fixed), solid panels, glass, fabric, and virtually any other item that can be mounted within a frame. Shutters may be installed for any number of reasons including to provide privacy, controlling the amount of sunlight that enters a room and to protect against weather. Depending on the application, and the construction of the window frame, shutters can be mounted to overlap the opening or fit within the opening. The term window shutter applies to many types of coverings including both interior and exterior shutters, used on the inside of a house or building, and exterior shutters, used on the outside of a structure. On some styles of buildings it is common to have decorative iron shutters to cover the doors as well as the windows.
