So you want to select a paint color for your home or office!

I have found that it is a very difficult job for most people to make a decision on what color to select when painting a room. The choices of paint colors available nowadays to select from make it so hard to make a decision. The majority of my clients decide that they want to start decorating after they have painted the room. Most of the time they visit the paint store, talk to the sales staff at the store and they select based on what colors they like, or they go by the suggestions of the sales associate in the store. In most cases the paint color is not quite right. First when selecting colors it has to be in your own environment and that is crucial if you want a successful project. Colors change based on the lighting in that particular space and the reflections of other colors that already exists in it.

Second it is important to select your fabrics first, then it becomes so easy to pull all the colors out of the fabric and make a decision on which color you prefer. Once you have selected the color you prefer, then you could go lighter or darker based on what type of design you are trying to achieve!

My Client’s request!

An old client called last week to schedule an appointment to redecorate her whole house all over again! With the exception of her master bedroom and family room that has been decorated not too long ago

Debbie became a client in 1997. We met at Naperville Chamber of commerce where she was working at the time and I was a somewhat new member.

We started with reupholstering some chairs for her and her living room drapes. Then we ended up designing the entire house. Her last project was the drapes for her family room, which was installed in the spring of 2009. Now Debbie wants to redo her living room, dining room, office, TV room and she wants to transform her son’s bed room into a guest bed room. As Debbie puts it, “I got hooked“on working with you Susan! Of course this is music to my ears, and that make me very happy that my clients like my work and feels that I understand her needs and style in decorating.

Debbie this time wants her living room cozier, less formal, and she wants the room to be used more often and not for guest only. She wants to sit there for relaxation, casual family gatherings, reading and so on.

We are using softer colors this time for a more casual look, Linens/ cottons and natural fibers for coziness, very comfortable sofa and chairs, and to die for window treatments that will enhance the total look!

The design for the window treatment has two fabrics for the body and one solid color as an accent. The under layer is a sheer linen in off white topped with a print fabric. A cluster of three buttons, in the solid color, to be placed on the edge of the printed fabric and spaced about 12” apart. (See Illustration).

She absolutely loved the ideas, was stunned by the selections of fabrics and the window treatment, and cannot wait for her room to become alive so she can enjoy hanging out there for the upcoming fall!

As an interior design professional, that is what I enjoy about my work. Transform dreams into reality for my clients!

August is the best time to redesign your child bedroom!

You want to give your child a head start to have a good school year? Redecorating their rooms is one way to motivate them. A nicely decorated room will help them stay organized, and focused.

You can make few changes to create a new look. How about picking some new theme, create a comfortable place to study as well as a place to hang out in. Custom valances, a custom headboard to match with some comfortable bedding, fun pillows and a fresh paint will do wonder to their attitude and motivation, moreover, it is one way you tell them I care!

Ask your child what is his or her dream of a bedroom, what type of a theme they like to create, sports, music, or perhaps a safari look. Taking the time to converse with your children and understand their needs, wants and aspiration to bond and help them start a fresh year with new set of goals for higher achievements and success!
