Pillows are an affordable accessory for any room. They can be functional, to make a seat more comfortable, or decorative to add an accent color, texture or just to make a statement. As far as cost, they can be inexpensive if they are ready made. Searching the stores, one can find beautiful pillows imported from India or China for as little as $25.00 a piece. Custom pillows however are a different story. Custom pillows can become very pricy based on the fabrics, trims, the type of insert, and all the bells and whistles that are added.

Making a room welcoming and hospitable is the goal when designing guest rooms. Whether designing a guest room in a large suburban space, or in a compact city dwelling, each has its own challenges. With careful planning and creativity, guest rooms will be an expression of the host’s style, hospitality and thoughtfulness.
Here are some tips and ideas when designing a guest room:
A comfortable bed is a must; consider an extra layer of down to cover the bed for extra comfort.
Vary the pillows from soft to extra firm and let the guests decide what is more comfortable for them.
The bed sheets must be soft. Egyptian cotton with a high thread count is recommended. How about adding fresh cotton fragrance when storing the linens? But be sure to ask if your guest has any allergies.
Upholstered head boards, pillow shams, Euro shams, decorative pillows, bed skirts, and canopies are all items that tell so much about the host.
Fresh flowers are another way to tell the guest they are important, and they are very much cared about! Again, be sure your guests don’t have allergies. If they do, silk flowers of high quality can be used and will fool anyone into thinking they’re fresh.
Displaying family pictures, trips, or special events will evoke conversation and discussion of happy times with guests. Another good idea is to have a wall display with words of wisdom. Special quotes framed or stenciled on walls is something to consider.
Try putting a coffee maker or electric kettle in the room with a selection of high quality teas. Add a silver tray with fine china, various sugars, honey, and a pitcher with glasses for cold water. Guests could enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or tea early in the morning in their own bed room without disturbing the hosting family.
Incorporate a reading corner with a comfortable chaise or chair, a soft comfy shawl, and a stack of well read books.

Trimmings, or as the French call them “Passementerie”, is a term used for the decorative finishing added to the edges of draperies, pillows, lamp shades, bedding, and furniture. Trims such as bullion fringe, cords, tapes, gimps ….etc are usually added for drama and to provide a unique custom look, or it can be simply added for function, such as hiding an unsightly seam, or joining two different fabrics. Whether it is added for function or for a decorative purpose, trims always bring beauty and style to any room. There are thousands of choices out in the world of decorating; some are imported as well as U.S made. Some have the formal feel like the ones made out of silk. Others might be less formal that are made of cotton. A perfect match of colors can be achieved by ordering a custom dye for a custom fringe if the budget allows it. It is always a good idea to explore the different possibilities for creating that one-of-a-kind look that is expressive and reflects a personal flair.
An Installation took place last week in Burr Ridge IL. The room was medium sized and well lit, however the furniture was a little over sized and too many pieces were used. That made the room seem even smaller. Here is how the windows were dressed to help the room appear bigger, and more spacious: the walls were painted in a warm, light taupe, and the treatment was kept simple. We raised the panels as far as possible, keeping the proportions in mind, and the color of the drapery fabric was the same color as the walls, lowering the contrast. Both of these things delude the eyes into thinking the room is larger than it is.

The client expressed interest in ripple fold draperies in place of sheers and blinds for privacy, and she wanted to create the feel of a five star hotel. I believe, she got it!
This past fall I WAS hired to provide designs for two clients in Burr Ridge Illinois.
The first project was for a dining room, with a very contemporary style. We decided on using the fabric Cufflink in a copper color. Notice the sheer fabric in the master bedroom in the video below. The same fabric is being used in espresso!
In the second home we are working on the master bedroom. We are using very vibrant colors, a scheme similar to the one in the video. The bedroom will have the Larry Laslo trims for the pillows and draperies.

Let’s say you want to add a vibrant red or magenta pink to energize a room, instead of painting the room in those colors, how about adding pillows with large prints containing these colors in addition you can repeat the same colors in some accessories here and there for repetition and balance!
Another way might be adding trims with vibrant colors to your plain solid drapery panels! A group of colorful trims in various widths and styles can be added going horizontally at the lower edge of a panel can bring the whole room to life! Or adding colorful trim on sheer draperies, going vertically on the leading edge!

Custom Window covering does more to your home than just privacy and light control!
Designing the appropriate window covering not only will enhance the window itself, but it will affect the entire room décor.
There are so many factors that will determine the success of the selection of the window covering, a competent window fashion designer, will ask more questions than just the client’s personal style or preferences, questions like:
·who is going to use the room?
·What part of the day the room will be in use?
·What is the mood that the client wants to be created in the room?
·Are there any architectural elements that will influence the design, such as the molding on the ceiling or perhaps the molding around the window?
·Are the windows arched? Is it going to be enhanced, and emphasized?
Even though the selections and possibilities are vast, below are five tips that will help in starting any window covering project:
1.If the room is small and the goal is to make it seem larger and more spacious, then the color choice of the fabric should be as close as possible to the wall. On the other hand if the room is huge and the goal is to make it feel cozier, the colors can have an apparent contrast from the walls and perhaps using large patterns in the fabric will make the walls come forward, and the room will shrink somewhat.
2.How about the ceiling, is it too low? Is the goal to make it appear higher? Vertical lines or stripes are a good way to help make the ceilings seem higher, another tip is to install the draperies as close to the ceiling as possible.
3.Considering the furniture style, size and placement. Heavy, over sized draperies in a room with delicate, petite furniture will look odd.
4.The use and placement of decorative embellishments is another area where attention must be paid. The color and style of the trims, fringes and tassels are important as well as where to place them. Adding a fringe or a trim in the wrong place might ruin the entire look of the drapery.
5.Textures are so important in the overall drapery design. Using variety, mixing several together, or bringing in the element of surprise is a key in creating superb, one of a kind drapery.
