Explore your hidden treasures!

When my client from Naperville, Dupage county, called me to redo her living and dinning areas, I was excited, motivated, and pumped up with energy!

I arrived to her place, a beautiful home, with large windows, very sunny and spacious, we sat down to discuss her needs, and her vision of what she wanted the spaces to look like when we will be done.

She wanted roman shades, with stationary side panels for the windows, fresh paint, new sofa, a rug,  reupholstering of two chairs and accessories!

When we talked about budget, we came up with a plan! We can do it in stages, and we can save by going on a treasure hunt right at her own home! You will be surprised on how many items you can find that can be reused, refurbished, and with a magical new face lift can transform it to a  brand new piece. I was specially excited to see a curio cabinet over stuffed with items, very special items that can be used as accessories here and there, and that meant reduction in our unnecessary spending on decorative items, and have the main budget on the windows and new a couch.

A collection of china cups and saucers were buried under  other items and they were well hidden in the curio cabinet! A flow of ideas came to my mind, why can’t we use them as our decorative items around the two rooms? My client welcomed the idea, and I had my wonderful handyman make me tiny shelves, then paint them, hang them on the wall in a special composition to have balance, and voila! New look, fresh, unique, and economical!

A Dining Room Design, with the wow factor! Naperville Illinois.

What was the client’s desire for this beautiful dining room?

I get a call from this wonderful client that I met in the mid nineties, and been working with her since then. Her house, located in Naperville, Dupage county Illinois, saw three different changes since then. She likes to update her house with new designs about every five to six years, and she gets so much joy each time with the transformation.

This time it is her dining room, her dream is to have a dining room that she could use every now and then for her, her husband, and the children when they come for visit.

She wanted a dining room that is formal enough for guests, yet it is user friendly for every day use.

She loves painted furniture, therefore we had her oak colonial dining table to be faux painted and distressed with several layers of paint to give depth to the piece in addition adding distressing where it looked natural from wear and tear of years of use. Her draperies came out looking stunning! We have selected together a cotton fabric printed with fruits, and a color scheme that works with the rest of the house. The fabric was a classic, though what made the draperies so special are the banding on the leading edges of each panel, a solid yellow cotton was selected that worked amazingly well with the main body of the drapery, the faux finished table and the wall paint.

Grommets were inserted along the length of the panels, right on the banding and a braid fringe was threaded through the grommets! We Both, my client and myself were so impressed by that look! Now that what we call ( THE WOW FACTOR)!

What determines the cost of any window covering are the labor cost, materials used and the installation cost.

Here are some tips to consider when you are planning your next window covering project!

· The design: the simpler the design, the less expensive the treatment will be. Flat valances, inverted pleat valances, shirred and pinch pleated on a board, or a cornice board is considered less costly to fabricate. You can add a little touch to a simple flat valance by adding a contrast trim, tassels on each end, or perhaps some buttons in a coordinating fabric.

· The cost of the materials: The variety is endless when selecting fabrics. You can find gorgeous cottons, silks, and woven blends at an affordable price. Mixing textures, or adding coordinating inexpensive trims, will give you that designer quality look at an affordable price. Another tip is to perhaps splurge on the hardware, and choose a modestly priced fabric. The rich, opulent look of the hardware will make up for the simplicity of the style and your choice of the fabric.

· The installation cost: One way to cut on the installation cost is by choosing economically installed treatments. Cornices, and board mounted valances, are less expensive to install than sheared or pleated on a rod.

Finally, the best way to save money is by work with a professional, who will help you avoid costly mistakes, direct you, share expertise and resources, and respect your budget and work within it.

Get inspired!

I love window shopping!!! And it is one of the ways I get design inspirations!

I spent all of Saturday going from one mall to the other, window shopping and enjoying the holiday decorations in town. I started at the Oakbrook mall, then the Fox valley mall and lastly The Chicago outlet Mall.  I particularly look at the detailing in the clothes or other items and include certain aspects in designs for my clients’ draperies.

I came back with ideas in how to use buttons, sheer fabrics, and metal clasps on clothes and how it can be used in window coverings. As a matter of fact, I might have found a great idea for one client I am currently working with in Oakbrook, Illinois.

I will share the design with you as soon as I am done with my drawings!
