When thinking about blinds, I think: neat, simple, orderly, compact, functional. They’re easy to clean, and they will give me full exposure of the window when I want a non-obstructed view.
Here are some general tips when selecting blinds:
- Verticals or any vertical sheers will enhance the height of the room.
- For vertical blinds, make sure to allow 3/4” clearance from the floor for easy traversing.
- For Wood or Venetian blinds, consider the use of decorative tapes to add color, pattern, and that customized look to the room.
- If vibrant colors are preferred, consider metal blinds. They are available in a wide array of colors, come cordless, and you can add tape to 2” slats for a rich, customized look. Make sure that the color of the metal blind is white to the street side, especially the front of the house, otherwise the facade of will not look unified.
- Generally the smaller the slats, the less light comes in when they are open.
- The top down feature is great for allowing some light in while maintaining privacy at the same time. This feature is ideal for cutting the sun glare when working on a computer. Now the cellular shades with the top down feature come with the cords hidden to the sides for a neater look that does not disturb the view.
- Select cordless for child and pet safety.

We all know that colors and light have an impact on our well being and will affect our emotions. As a window fashion professional, I am aware of when new products come to the market that add colors and beauty to the windows, and at the same time give you full control of how much light to bring in! Adding new colors, textures, and patterns to any space will provide the perfect pick me up, and push the tired look into the past. You can accomplish this with the use of fabrics: sumptuous silks, breezy linen or sheers, fire hot velvets, create a tropical retreat with large floral cottons…I think you get the picture. What about lighting: have you considered the gorgeous silhouettes from Hunter Douglas? Using a product like that will allow the right amount of light while protecting your home flooring, furniture and fabrics from the UV rays. Or the convenience of motorized shades that you can lower or raise automatically as the sun moves across your living space. What about the light bulbs that you use in your home: the “cool and bluish” fluorescent or the “warm, yellowish” incandescent lighting. Each type interacts with the colors and natural light in the room.
With what is available today for you, from the unique high technology of power controlled products or the more traditional ones, such as solar shades or roman shades…the possibilities are endless. My job as a window fashion designer is to share with my clients what is available, what is new, and what will work for each individual situation! Feel free to call us for a one hour complimentary consultation! (630)420-0800.

5 Tips when selecting Custom Window fashions.
Custom Window covering does more to your home than just privacy and light control!
Designing the appropriate window covering not only will enhance the window itself, but it will affect the entire room décor.
There are so many factors that will determine the success of the selection of the window covering, a competent window fashion designer, will ask more questions than just the client’s personal style or preferences, questions like:
· who is going to use the room?
· What part of the day the room will be in use?
· What is the mood that the client wants to be created in the room?
· Are there any architectural elements that will influence the design, such as the molding on the ceiling or perhaps the molding around the window?
· Are the windows arched? Is it going to be enhanced, and emphasized?
Even though the selections and possibilities are vast, below are five tips that will help in starting any window covering project:
1. If the room is small and the goal is to make it seem larger and more spacious, then the color choice of the fabric should be as close as possible to the wall. On the other hand if the room is huge and the goal is to make it feel cozier, the colors can have an apparent contrast from the walls and perhaps using large patterns in the fabric will make the walls come forward, and the room will shrink somewhat.
2. How about the ceiling, is it too low? Is the goal to make it appear higher? Vertical lines or stripes are a good way to help make the ceilings seem higher, another tip is to install the draperies as close to the ceiling as possible.
3. Considering the furniture style, size and placement. Heavy, over sized draperies in a room with delicate, petite furniture will look odd.
4. The use and placement of decorative embellishments is another area where attention must be paid. The color and style of the trims, fringes and tassels are important as well as where to place them. Adding a fringe or a trim in the wrong place might ruin the entire look of the drapery.
5. Textures are so important in the overall drapery design. Using variety, mixing several together, or bringing in the element of surprise is a key in creating superb, one of a kind drapery.
Beautiful Window covering, will make any room beautiful. Think about it this way, what a Prada purse, or a tiffany necklace will do to any ordinary dress? I believe, it will make such an impact, the eye will be drawn to it and the simple dress will look stunning, and that’s what we call the wow factor!
That’s what the right window treatment does for you!
