What determines the cost of any window covering are the labor cost, materials used and the installation cost.

Here are some tips to consider when you are planning your next window covering project!

· The design: the simpler the design, the less expensive the treatment will be. Flat valances, inverted pleat valances, shirred and pinch pleated on a board, or a cornice board is considered less costly to fabricate. You can add a little touch to a simple flat valance by adding a contrast trim, tassels on each end, or perhaps some buttons in a coordinating fabric.

· The cost of the materials: The variety is endless when selecting fabrics. You can find gorgeous cottons, silks, and woven blends at an affordable price. Mixing textures, or adding coordinating inexpensive trims, will give you that designer quality look at an affordable price. Another tip is to perhaps splurge on the hardware, and choose a modestly priced fabric. The rich, opulent look of the hardware will make up for the simplicity of the style and your choice of the fabric.

· The installation cost: One way to cut on the installation cost is by choosing economically installed treatments. Cornices, and board mounted valances, are less expensive to install than sheared or pleated on a rod.

Finally, the best way to save money is by work with a professional, who will help you avoid costly mistakes, direct you, share expertise and resources, and respect your budget and work within it.

I have received this picture with a question from a client:

My window in the living room has wood blinds and untreated transom, it looks unfinished and the room is cold during the winter months and hot in the afternoon during the summer months! Any suggestions on how to finish it up and solutions for the coolness and heat lose?

Dear client,

I totally understand your situation, I also agree that your room lacks the warmth and friendliness and it needs some fabric treatment!

Here is my suggestion:

Based on what you have told me per our phone conversation, you liked full length draperies with a cornice or plain valance.

How about some ripple fold draperies that will give you a bit of a modern flare that you like and at the same time it will open in the center with small stack back to each side which will give you more exposure of the outside! This will enable you to look at the outside while sitting in your recliner as you shared with me that was what you do to relax after a long day at work!

The draperies can be lined and interlined for added insulation. The interlining will add body to the drapes for a more opulent look. Then we can top it off with a plain straight bottom edged valance for a more finished look!

Take a look below at the illustration:

Hope you liked my suggestion, and let me know if you need to modify the design or start all over for an entirely new design.

I am here to serve you with all your decorating needs!

Get the best of two worlds!

Have you sometimes looked at a window with some vertical or horizontal blinds and thought to yourself, I am not sure I like that! It looks too hard; the room is not inviting or not complete!

You defiantly like the convenience of the light control your vertical or horizontal blinds offer, yet you feel something is missing!

Soft treatments over hard ones can complement one another, and will give a more formal feel to any room. Picture some cellular blinds with drapery side panels, verticals with a top treatment, and wood blinds with a cornice board; now you can imagine how that will give the room a more finished look.

Living rooms, dining room, bedrooms, or any room that require some formality, a marriage between the light control the hard window covering offers and the softness of draperies or top treatments will give you a happy results.

Low Cost Valances!

My client asked: What are the most economical types of Valances?

My answer is:

v The less fabric to use the lesser the cost will be. For example a flat valance will use less fabric than pleated or tightly shirred valance.

v The simpler the style and less laborious the less costly the valance will be. For example a flat valance will cost less than a valance with shaped lower edge, or having one fabric is less expensive than having a trim or banding in a contrast color.

v Board mounted valances usually are less expensive to install than valances on rods, therefore if you are looking to cut cost you have to consider the installation cost too.

Few Tips to remember when choosing window covering for your kitchen:

·         When the kitchen design is simple and has no apparent focal point, why not have your window covering as a focal point?

·         Use materials that can be cleaned easily. One way to protect the fabrics is by adding a protective coating to repel soil and grease.

·         For over the sink window, try to have valances verse a treatment that drops longer, to avoid soil, and the treatment will soon lose its charm and elegance.

·         Your colors textures and style has to enhance the design of the cabinetry, the flooring, the lighting, and the overall design of the kitchen.

·         Allow ample light to come through the window. Having plenty of natural light is  favored almost in every kitche.

5 Tips for Selecting custom window coverings

5 Tips when selecting Custom Window fashions.

Custom Window covering does more to your home than just privacy and light control!

Designing the appropriate window covering not only will enhance the window itself, but it will affect the entire room décor.

There are so many factors that will determine the success of the selection of the window covering, a competent window fashion designer, will ask more questions than just the client’s personal style or preferences, questions like:

·         who is going to use the room?

·         What part of the day the room will be in use?

·         What is the mood that the client wants to be created in the room?

·         Are there any architectural elements that will influence the design, such as the molding on the ceiling or perhaps the molding around the window?

·         Are the windows arched? Is it going to be enhanced, and emphasized?

Even though the selections and possibilities are vast, below are five tips that will help in starting any window covering project:

1.       If the room is small and the goal is to make it seem larger and more spacious, then the color choice of the fabric should be as close as possible to the wall. On the other hand if the room is huge and the goal is to make it feel cozier, the colors can have an apparent contrast from the walls and perhaps using large patterns in the fabric will make the walls come forward, and the room will shrink somewhat.

2.       How about the ceiling, is it too low? Is the goal to make it appear higher? Vertical lines or stripes are a good way to help make the ceilings seem higher, another tip is to install the draperies as close to the ceiling as possible.

3.       Considering the furniture style, size and placement. Heavy, over sized draperies in a room with delicate, petite furniture will look odd.

4.       The use and placement of decorative embellishments is another area where attention must be paid. The color and style of the trims, fringes and tassels are important as well as where to place them. Adding a fringe or a trim in the wrong place might ruin the entire look of the drapery.

5.       Textures are so important in the overall drapery design. Using variety, mixing several together, or bringing in the element of surprise is a key in creating superb, one of a kind drapery.

Beautiful Window covering, will make any room beautiful. Think about it this way, what a Prada purse, or a tiffany necklace will do to any ordinary dress? I believe, it will make such an impact, the eye will be drawn to it and the simple dress will look stunning, and that’s what we call the wow factor!

That’s what the right window treatment does for you!
